As a kid, almost every Sunday, my Dad and I would sit in the garage and listen to the Portuguese football commentary.
My Dad would have his glass of wine, we would chat about soccer, and when a goal was scored, the commentator would ecstatically belt out a shriek of “Gooaaaal, Gooaaaal, Gooaaaal”. It went on for eternity (as if we didn’t get it the first time).
If it was our team who scored, we would shriek with the commentator, jumping up like Olympic hurdlers while proceeding to hug one another in a crazy fashion. At times, Mom, Dad, sister, dog, and anyone else in the vicinity would be in the huddle for that huge team hug…lol…totally hilarious! You had to be there to understand the euphoria. Yes, crazy I know; but football does that to a family!
A true football fan would agree that commentators bring so much passion and sometimes comedy to a broadcast and over the years, there have been some memorable moments which can be seen in the following videos.
These clips brought back some wonderful memories of the good old days. I would do anything to jump up like a lunatic screaming “Gooaaaal” while hugging my Dad just one more time.
May he RIP. I miss him so much…
During my playing career, I was known as the team prankster and I am proud to say that I successfully completed many pranking missions at the expense of my team mates. I do remember a prank being wonderfully executed, which I want to add, took a long time to plan. The prank was done to my room mate, but the result for me was rather painful, as he didn’t find it amusing and proceeded to punch me while I was stuck in a cupboard (which is where the prank mission control center was situated). To this day, this prank is always a highlight story when we get together and he also has a chapter dedicated to this prank in his autobiography. Yes, my prank is now famous…it was executed to perfection! Like me, Raheem Sterling executes a prank on John Stones, who wasn’t impressed at all (which makes me want to laugh even more). It’s always a good laugh when one isn’t the victim of the prank! Rio Ferdinand had a show a few years ago where he pranked fellow players. Below is one of those shows where he pranks the one and only David Beckham. After spending over an hour watching the various videos and laughing a whole lot, I highly recommend you watch it too (search Rio Ferdinand footballer pranks), it’s an hour well spent.
Swiss coach Martin Schmidt has identified a unique method for getting the best out of his team and it does appear to be working.
Wolfsburg, who recently hired Schmidt, is undefeated in the last four fixtures and credit is given in part due to his meticulous tactics, but also due to his unique method.
“Smiles” are returning to Volkswagen Arena. Very white ones!
It seems laughable but the players are each doing it after every game…I might try it myself!
In a previous edition of our newsletter, I had a story about Patrick Kluivert and his two sons.
This week, it’s Phil Neville’s son Harry, who is a technically gifted midfielder with similarities to David Beckham. The younger Neville is a target for Manchester United after impressing Valencia’s youth teams.
I wonder how much Phil pushed Harry over the years to mold him into the prospect he is today. Did he take the laid-back approach? Was he that pushy parent? Was he always the coach or the parent? I guess it doesn’t matter as whatever approach was taken, worked.

Who needs an agent when social media seems to be the way forward for transfers these days?
Paul Hayes, a 34-year old journeyman forward with notable spells at Scunthorpe and Charlton, had been a free-agent since the summer.
Newport Manager Mike Flynn found him on LinkedIn, much to Hayes’ surprise, who is now signed to a contract.
Clubs / Managers are exploring all avenues to find players these days and with social media, the world is their oyster. Again, players with professional aspirations, please be aware of what you post on social media…it could make or break a deal.
Moral of the story, get a Linkedln account…you never know who might search your profile!
Wouldn’t it be nice to get a Linkedln message from Mourinho or Zidane ??
Anything is possible…
Sky Sports released their latest list of power rankings revealing who the best players are in the league right now.
Each player’s performance is assessed by a complex system which analyses 32 different matchday stats and every position on the field is awarded a different number of points for different achievements. Only the last 5 matches are considered, with the most recent games weighted more heavily.
With Manchester City leading the league and playing amazingly well, one would think a few of their players would make this list. To my surprise, none did!
Who do you think occupies the number one position? Hint: “Harry” up and go check out the list…
This player was caught driving his Bentley at 148 km/hr in an urban area where the speed limit is normally 50 km/hr. That’s only three times over the speed limit…what’s the problem?
The Brazil under-21 international paid a fine, which for him is pocket change, and had his driver’s license suspended for eight months.
This is a case of a young man having too much money, buying a Bentley, and assuming he is untouchable.
He did express regret for his poor judgment. Hopefully he shat his pants enough to learn from this expensive experience and uses speed to score goals instead of getting himself arrested again!
