With his curly perm, bushy mustache, and penchant for the unpredictable, Colombian goalkeeper Rene Higuita was a famous face in football during the 90’s.
Nicknamed ‘EL Loco’ (The Madman), Higuita, now 51, enjoyed a professional career spanning 13 clubs, nearly 500 games, and a quarter of a century. Even though he was crazy, he was one hell of a keeper…that needs to be said.
I loved watching this guy as we never knew what the hell he was going to do. He was so unpredictable and unorthodox on how he made his saves. I guess in his mind, it didn’t matter how the ball was saved. As long as it stayed out the back of the net, he was fine. His coaches on the other hand, and many Columbian football fans around the world, were on the verge of heart attacks while watching him play.
He is most famous for the scorpion kick save vs England at Wembley Stadium…absolute madness. He pulled it off and had football fans talking about it then and they are still talking about it today.

Such a fun guy to watch!
