The Antonio Report is a website / newsletter dedicated to my Dad, Antonio who passed away of pancreatic cancer in October 2014. My Dad, known as “Tony” to everyone around him (or “Antonio from Madeira” as he referred to himself), was a very funny, charismatic, full-of-energy person and his love for football was instilled in me from a very young age.
From the time I started walking, my Dad kicked a soccer ball with me and I have many wonderful memories of my Dad and I together. My fondest memory is of my Dad and I listening to the football commentary on the radio; in those days there was no football on TV. We would spend every Sunday afternoon listening to games and my Dad would talk football with me for hours. When there was no football to listen to on the radio, it would turn into a family football show where every one of my family members had an opinion on how football should be played. So, as you can see, my family is football-crazy and football is life for all of us.
My Dad played in the higher ranks of the Portuguese amateur leagues and was pursued by several professional teams, but chose a career as a mechanic instead. He eventually became a businessman and was a top-class mechanic who was known to fix anything and everything.
Even though he had a business life, his love for football never ever faded. It was always a huge part of his life. His passion for the game was so admirable to me. I owe my professional footballing career to my Dad. His guidance was what drove me to achieve what most people only dream of.
My Dad had his opinion on everything football, and I have to say, most times he was spot-on with his verdicts. His knowledge of the game was incredible; he understood formations, counter-attacks, and defensive zones just to name a few, and he always found a funny side to everything. He loved to laugh and he loved people. This is the reason it was fun to listen to him talk football. He would have everyone around him dying of laughter.
It is my Dad’s laughter, voice, and passion that I hope to bring to everyone via this newsletter. My Dad always taught me to love the game of football. He always said if you don’t love football, you will never be good at football. Football is not a job, nor hobby; it’s a love. And without football, there is no you.
This newsletter is for all those diehards who love the game as much as my Dad and I do. Let’s grow this into one big funny, happy, crazy football family.
Dad, on a daily basis I think about all the amazing memories I made with you. I miss you so much. I love you!!!
